PlayStation Store will remove movies purchased by users
An official notice has appeared on the German and Austrian PlayStation Store website, which, translated, reads: “As of August 31, 2022, due to a change in our licensing agreements with content providers, you will no longer be able to view previously purchased Studio Canal content and it will be removed from your video libraries. We greatly appreciate your continued support. Thanks”
In other words, customers will lose access to movies like Apocalypse Now, Django, John Wick, La La Land, Saw, and The Hunger Games that they purchased from the PlayStation Store, and not for rent, but for permanent use.
In March 2021, Sony revealed that the PlayStation Store would no longer offer the purchase or rental of new titles on PS4 and PS5 from August of that year. At the same time, the company assured its customers that “users can still access movies and TV programs that they purchased from the PlayStation Store to play on their PS4, PS5 and mobile devices” after the specified period.
Naturally, such a measure is not connected with technical problems, but exclusively with legal re-pipes, which means that such situations will certainly arise in the future. Moreover, claims that they will not affect such monsters of the streaming market as Netflix and Amazon are nothing more than complacency. After all, film companies are trying to promote their own video services, such as Paramount + or HBO Max, so they will inevitably lure users to them from those companies that offer their content. So the confrontation between them is just beginning.
