SVS Sb 2000 Pro Review
We checked how the active subwoofer SB-2000 by SVS works, extending the possibilities in terms of bass reproduction in audio or home theater systems.
The range of SVS subwoofers is impressive, so customers can choose from a wide range of active woofer designs. Prices vary greatly depending on the capabilities of a given model and its functionality.
SVS is a pioneer in the use of a special application for controlling subwoofer functions from smartphones or tablets. In addition, the proprietary application developed by SVS significantly extends the adaptive properties of the subwoofer to the conditions in the listening room and cooperation with various types of systems, regardless of whether it is a two-channel or multi-channel installation.
The SB-2000 Pro model is the latest design combining the advantages of compact woofers with the capabilities of the most advanced subwoofers produced by SVS while maintaining an attractive price.
Compact but powerful
The SB-2000 Pro, like the more expensive SB-3000, contains solutions that have a significant impact on improving efficiency, thus directly affecting the quality of the bass range. The basis of the tested design is a class D amplifier, and the amplification used by the engineers is called the Sledge STA-550D. This efficient design, taking up little space inside the subwoofer, has a high output current generated by MOSFET transistors. The pulsed power supply system, consisting of a large battery of parallel connected electrolytic capacitors, which store the current, is also responsible for the high capabilities of the amplifier. The system ensures high current efficiency of the supply path, which is also characterized by significantly reduced impedance,
The electronics prepared in this way is to guarantee a constant and fast power supply to the powerful woofer, thus increasing the precision of its operation. This translates into more effective bass processing and its greater diversity and accuracy in the reproduction of individual sounds appearing in the lowest tones band. The SB-2000 Pro can be controlled manually, via the easy-to-use rear panel with multi-functional controls and a clear LED indicator, or remotely, via a special application for a smartphone or tablet. The box is closed and small, which is typical of modern active woofers.
A small closed housing with an efficient woofer driven by a powerful amplifier creates the perfect conditions for a fast, well-controlled, but low-reaching bass. The woofer used in the SB-2000 Pro is almost identical to the one used in the larger and more expensive SB-3000 subwoofer, with the difference that it has a smaller diameter. This does not prevent the SB-2000 Pro from extending down to 19Hz in the bass, with a slight decrease from the nominal characteristic, which remains practically constant in the full bass range. The efficient and solid woofer has an aluminum diaphragm, where stiffness is the most important because it has to work with large amplitudes of deflections, therefore it is heavily loaded.
Powerful and effective bass
The character of the bass of the SB-2000 Pro practically coincides with what was presented not so long ago by its more expensive brother, namely the SB-3000 model. However, in the case of that model, the bass range was reproduced more extensively and massively, mainly due to the larger woofer and the box with a larger volume. The SB-2000 Pro seems to go almost the same low, which means that it has a similar range in the bass, and this was confirmed by listening to the sound of the organ in both two-channel and multi-channel configurations. The differences are really minimal.
The SB-2000 Pro was great for watching action movies such as “Spectre” or “First Man”. The tested subwoofer had no problem reproducing the roar of firearms in several scenes of “Spectre”, or the spectacular launch of the giant Saturn V rocket during the Apollo 11 mission from the movie “First Man”.
The SB-2000 Pro subwoofer has an agile, fast, but also very powerful bass with an impressive punch. This is certainly influenced not only by the high-current class D amplifier but also by the aluminum diaphragm of the woofer, which reacts instantly to impulses from the amplifier.
In general, closed-box designs certainly benefit from stereo bass reproduction, as they are better able to integrate with almost any loudspeaker. The entire setup process will be facilitated by the SVS company application, written specifically for all models of subwoofers from this American manufacturer. A particularly helpful option is the graphic equalizer, thanks to which we can quickly interfere with the bass response curve. This is very useful when looking for the optimal cut-off point, i.e. the transition of the bass from the speakers to the subwoofer (and vice versa), in a stereo configuration. Any boost can also be leveled with the option of adjusting the bass compensation in the listening room.
The SB-2000 Pro subwoofer has an agile, fast, but also very powerful bass with an impressive punch.
The SB-2000 Pro in a stereo configuration offers a contoured and differentiated presentation at a level that even more, demanding listeners can accept. It is also worth noting that the tested subwoofer is very difficult to throw off balance. Even when we turn up the volume significantly, it will not fall into unpleasant resonances, nor will it cause significant distortion of the sound.
Worth knowing
SVS active subwoofers from the 2000 series to such series as the 3000 Series, 4000 Series, and 16-Ultra Series are equipped with the possibility of wireless control via the application available for devices with the iOS and Android operating systems. This application not only allows for independent control of more than one subwoofer operating in the room but also offers a wide range of settings, thanks to which we can quickly and easily adjust the sound character we are interested in in the bass range. The advantage of this solution is primarily the fact that we do not have to move from the central listening point, which significantly increases not only the precision of all settings but also shortens the time needed to complete the task of tuning the active subwoofer to the acoustics of the room.
The SVS app connects to the active subwoofer via Bluetooth, offering many interesting options. In addition to adjusting the basic parameters, such as the volume level, upper-frequency cutoff, or phase, the user can also set the level of bass boost in a specific listening room, as well as EQ parameters. Several different curves can be defined to influence the bass reproduction characteristics and even the polarization of the loudspeaker. All settings can be stored in memory and even assigned to a specific subwoofer model, which greatly simplifies the adjustment process when using several such active units.
Summary
The SB-2000 model is the latest design in the catalog of the American brand SVS. I have to admit that it is only slightly inferior in capabilities to the more expensive SB-3000, i.e. a model belonging to a higher series. The domain of the tested subwoofer is impressive power in the bass range, thanks to which all low noises – sounds from movies are always reproduced effectively and, above all, coherently with what the front channels give. The SB-2000 Pro responds instantly to the signal from the preamplifier. The range it has also deserved recognition because with such dimensions of the box and the diameter of the speaker, hardly anyone expects that the sound of the organ can be reproduced in such a realistic way.
The SB-2000 Pro has the ability to be controlled using a special application, thanks to which we can adjust its sound character at any time to our needs or the requirements of the system with which it will work. Settings can be stored in memory and thus activated depending on whether we will use the SB-2000 Pro in a two-channel or multi-channel cinema installation.
