2020 Ferrari DF90 Stradale
The Ferrari F8 Tributo coupe presented in winter turned out to be just another version of the Italia model, which is already ten years old. But this car remained in the range only because the mid-engined supercar of a truly new generation made a huge leap forward and outperformed even the former flagship LaFerrari hypercar in terms of performance! Meet the latest Ferrari SF90 Stradale coupe, which celebrates the 90th anniversary of the Scuderia Ferrari racing team in its index.
This is the first rechargeable hybrid of the brand and the first flagship of the Ferrari lineup in the last 30 years, which has not twelve, but only eight cylinders under the hood. The bi-turbo engine located in the base is the result of the evolution of the former F154 engine with a 90-degree block camber, known from many Ferrari models. Cylinder diameter increased from 86.5 to 88 mm, displacement increased from 3.9 to 4.0 liters, a new direct injection system with a pressure of 350 bar was installed, the cooling system was changed, electronic control of the exhaust gas pressure relief valve (wastegate) was used . As a result, the engine now develops 780 hp. and 800 Nm against 720 hp and 770 Nm for the F8 Tributo.
With pure electric power, the new supercar can also drive forward: in eDrive front-wheel drive mode, the coupe can accelerate to 135 km/h. The 7.9 kWh lithium-ion battery is positioned vertically behind the seats and provides a driving range of up to 25 km.
The body and chassis are completely new and made using carbon fiber. Chassis bending stiffness increased by 20%, and torsional stiffness by 40% at once. Engineers were able to place the main units lower than before, so the center of gravity dropped a little, and the cockpit also became 20 mm closer to the ground.
At the front, there is a radiator for cooling electric motors and inverters in the center, on the sides there are two more radiators for the internal combustion engine and gearbox, and air channels for cooling the brakes are attached under the compact matrix headlights. Ferrari is mastering active aerodynamics: the hybrid coupe has a movable shut-off Gurney damper. In fact, this is a section of the rear fairing, which is recessed down, changing the direction of air flow. At a speed of 250 km / h, downforce reaches 390 kg.
In addition to the purely electric mode, the Ferrari SF90 Stradale has three more presets: Hybrid, Performance and the most extreme Qualify. They differ, among other things, in the logic of the hybrid system and recuperation. The advanced slip assistant, now called eSSC (electronic Side Slip Control), also works with electric motors. And the brake control is now “by wire”: the electronics itself distributes work between hydraulic mechanisms and recuperation.
The hybrid superstructure weighs 270 kg, so the dry weight of the coupe is an impressive 1570 kg compared to 1330 for the F8 Tributo model. But in dynamics, the new car has a significant advantage: acceleration to 100 km / h takes 2.5 s instead of 2.9, and acceleration to 200 km / h lasts only 6.7 s versus 7.8. The maximum speed is the same 340 km / h. And for the hybrid, the Assetto Fiorano track package has been prepared, which reduces the weight of the car by 30 kg. It includes carbon fiber doors and aerodynamic elements, titanium springs and exhaust system, other shock absorbers, as well as special Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.

The interior is also a revolution for Ferrari. There is a huge 16-inch screen for drawn instruments, separate touchpads for controlling light and climate control, as well as touch buttons on the steering wheel, which are equipped with haptic feedback. A projection screen is provided, and the transmission control selector on the central tunnel is stylized as the gearshift mechanism of Ferrari cars of yesteryear.
The new hybrid coupe will hit the market closer to 2020. The price has not yet been announced, but the Ferrari SF90 Stradale will definitely be more expensive than the 812 Superfast with a V12 engine, which costs about 400 thousand euros. However, the price tag will not rise to the level of LaFerrari (1.2 million euros), because the SF90 will be an “ordinary” (by the standards of the brand, of course) production car without circulation restrictions.
